Discipleship

Discipleship:  Ready . . . Set . . . Grow . . . In Christ!

According to Webster’s dictionary, a disciple can be defined as “a pupil of the doctrines of another.”  The Adult Discipleship Committee has developed a brochure to guide you in your journey to be a pupil of the doctrines of Jesus Christ!  This document is divided into four Learning Streams – The Bible, History, Theology, and Spiritual Formation.  To use this resource, there is no beginning or end – it is intended to be a lifelong learning project!  It’s not a checklist and it doesn’t come with a timeline or a deadline!

Discipleship is all about building Jesus’ habits into our lives so that our lives look more and more like His.  Jesus was a teacher!  He called people to follow him, as they did they learned to be members of God’s kingdom.

Theological scholars have often referred to the Great Commission – to go and make disciples of all nations.  To accomplish this, we must become students!  Worship calls us to reorient and set right our relationship with God.  After worship, God calls us to maintain and deepen that relationship!  At FPC – Kingwood, we currently provide 48 different study groups! Sunday School, Wednesday Family Night, Men’s Fraternity, Women’s Circles, Footsteps, Dawn Patrol, and Small Groups name just a few!

In John 15, Jesus says “I am the vine and you are the branches.”  We are, he says, to bear fruit.  “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.  This to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”  With every branch that bears fruit, he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.  What a promise – to know that Jesus will reward our efforts to grow in faith!

So, what will your next step be in your faith walk?  The Adult Discipleship committee is here to help you.  We will consciously offer opportunities on an annual basis to assist you in your endeavor.  Resources are currently available for you to join a class or engage in personal study.  Class opportunities are listed in the Weekly in your Sunday morning bulletin.  Visit the church library to discover a wealth of resources available for checkout.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”  Matthew 7:7-8
